My Policy on Sponsorship and Ads

The truth is, money speaks, and it's hard to turn away an offer from a corporation with millions of dollars of advertising revenue. But, what people want, and ultimately what this great art form needs are authentic voices. Getting sponsored is a great, quick, easy way to make money - you're given a product or service, asked to write an article, you post it, and you're paid. The problem is, you're giving something huge up in return for a quick easy payout - your reader's trust.

The Perfect Ice Cream Scoop…

I had a total "aha" moment in the kitchen; I went on a search a couple months ago for the best ice cream scoop, with the intention of sharing it with everyone, and I never shared my findings! Truthfully, it was kind of a joke at first, but when I realized how most normal scoops are so disappointing - never releasing, getting an ugly scoop, or just chipping away small shavings - I also realized how it wasn't really that silly of a search after all. Unlike some reviews that'll compare five different ones and then reveal their best, I'll get quick to the point. Sure, there are a lot of great scoops out there, but there's something just a little better about this one.

Turning over a new leaf, creatively speaking

For a long time, this blog has been a labor of love. Throughout the years I've always come back to it. Recently I made the decision to set it aside for a while and work on doing more video work. Unfortunately, for all of us "old-school" types, my experience has been that written content is not as appealing as it once was; video has taken over as the preferred content medium. Still though, I am drawn back again and again to my writing, and, as much as I do this for others, I do it chiefly for me. I am reminded of a poem, "so you want to be a writer?" by Charles Bukowski. It's a fatalistic view on, really, any type of creative work.

Well, this has been a little while in the making. A couple weeks ago I was sitting enjoying a drink and some sun at LA Jackson, and I told myself it was time. Time to finally bite the bullet and put the feelers out there. For what? The next portion of the blog. I've been working on the style section for years but it's never been what I've wanted it to be. I've taken a lot down, and been waiting for the right situation. I'm here now. So why wait anymore? Just do it, right?

Nashville Surpasses Memphis as Tennessee’s Largest City

Nashville now takes the crown as the largest city in Tennessee. Recent census statistics have surfaced that now gives Nashville a slight (just under 8,000 residents) advantage over Memphis, one that is projected to continue to increase given the level of growth and immigration to the Nashville area, due in large part to strong job and housing markets. Curious to see how things really panned out, and how Memphis could've been ahead of Nashville in past, I did a little digging. If you go outside of the city limits and consider the broader metropolitan areas, you come up with the following census data.

When I left Illinois, I left behind one of the biggest inspirations of my life, a restaurant in a town just west of where I grew up. Global Gourmet was and is one of, if not the best restaurants one can find in Southern Illinois. I have been to restaurants all across the states and have never found anything like it. A perfect mix of ambience, class (and some sass), music, food, and drink, it finds a place on my lifetime culinary adventure list as one of the few true "five-star experiences". Ever since then, I've been in search of a vintage downtown building with high tin ceilings, with dark lighting of varying gold, amber, and rouge hues, with beautiful women (and a few handsome men) serving up potent, crafted cocktails with matter-of-fact speed and finesse alongside a unique and always changing international selection of tapas-style plates, salads, entrees, and desserts. It was the neighborhood charm, the regular crowd, and the always extant camaraderie that gave the place life and the joie de vivre, or joy of life that I so love.

Making a Career from Blogging

This started off as a Facebook post. I kept trying to condense it down, but I inevitably had to leave important details out. Somebody asked a little while after I posted my last Facebook status about making blogging my career in 2017, “how do you make money just writing and posting articles?” Good question. You’ve gotta have something or some reason to write, in the first place. Writing was never something I had in mind as a career. I think the desire to write comes from a need to communicate. For me it was to communicate thoughts that I felt had value to them but might not be all that well-accepted. It started back in college, at a point where I was very unhappy with what I was doing. The details are for another post, but to state it succintly, I felt like we, the students, were all at the center...

Dating In The Age of Social Media

I’ve got an idea. It’s going to be short, quick, and easy. If we all slowed down a little bit, we’d have a lot more fun. The next romantic interest you come across, let’s try something new – the friend test. As I browse all the social networking apps, specifically the ones centered around finding romantic opportunities, I sense a lot of heads hitting brick walls. The instant gratification aspect of dating through apps on your phone has also made everyone get in a hurry to find “the one”. I think we’re doing it wrong. If you truly want a relationship, stop trying so hard. Slow down and see if you can build a friendship first. Here’s why… Relationships are not all about love, sex, and intimacy. That’s what so many people want because it’s the “feel good” stuff, but the problem is that it’s finite if there’s no foundation...
